Tattoo Aftercare
How to treat your new tattoo to prevent infection
Professional tattoo artists always wipe your tattoo with antiseptic to clean it as they are applying your tattoo. This helps keep the tattoo area clean and germ free while they are still using the tattoo needle on your skin. Upon completion of your tattoo the artist will give the entire area a good clean with antiseptic and apply an antiseptic ointment. Finally the tattooist will cover the tattoo with a bandage of some kind or maybe a piece of cellophane.
When your tattoo is completed the tattoo studio should explain exactly how you should take care of your new tattoo. Some of the better artists will talk you through detailed care of your tattoo and give you a detailed sheet with all of the information you need. Taking care of your new tattoo is not difficult but some simple tattoo aftercare can save you a lot of future problems. Do not leave the tattoo studio if you are unsure of how to care for your tattoo, if in any doubt ask the tattoo artist questions before you leave.
Keep your tattoo dry at first then use Tattoo Goo ointment
You should remove the bandage from your tattoo after about one hour, do not leave it on for more than two hours. Initially keep your tattoo dry but clean it every few hours. To prevent any type of infection always make sure your hands are clean before touching or cleaning your tattoo. Wash your tattoo carefully with cold water and a little antibacterial soap, you should avoid normal soaps for the first few days.
Use moisturising products such as Tattoo Goo on new tattoos
You will also need to purchase some moisturising ointment for your tattoo. Ointments such as Vitamin A and D or Tattoo Goo are best to keep your tattoo moisturised. A and D or Tattoo Goo will keep your tattoo clean and shiny and should be used 4 times a day for at least the first week, then at shorter intervals. Apply a thin layer of Tattoo Goo after washing about 4 times a day for the first week or so. After about two weeks the tattoo may start to peel, this is normal. Do not pick the tattoo if it begins to peel but just let any bits of dead skin get washed away naturally during washing or the application of Tattoo Goo.
Good initial Tattoo Aftercare keeps your Tattoo design sharp for the future
Many tattoos will having areas of scabbing after the initial healing period. Do not pick at any scabs on your tattoo as you could end up damaging the design of your tattoo. You can put Vitamin A and D ointment or Tattoo Goo on your tattoo if it has scabbed over but avoid picking at it, the ointment should help stop the scab from itching.
Take good care of your tattoo in the initial stages and it will look its best for the years to come. Unless you have your tattoo removed with laser surgery you have it for life so the first few weeks of care will pay off in the long run.
